The paragraph is the minimum writing unit that explains and develops the meaning of an idea. A paragraph generally has several sentences, all of which contain the same keyword or key idea that controls the information in the rest of the paragraph.
All prose text is organized into paragraphs. In turn, each paragraph for one or more sentences, begins with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. Paragraphs can be visually identified by the use of indentation, or by a larger white space between them. The paragraph is used to change the subject in conversations.
Regarding its content, each paragraph expresses a main idea supported, generally, by several secondary or argumentative ideas. When reading a text, it is convenient to identify and relate these ideas to improve reading comprehension.
When writing a paragraph, consider following an order of ideas, state the main idea and support it, explain it or complete it with secondary ideas, also express yourself clearly and correctly, and avoid unnecessary repetition of words.
The paragraphs can be of different types, the most common are the narration, definition, classification and division paragraphs, description, examples, comparison and contrast, sequence, evaluation, cause and effect, argumentation and persuasion.
