Anonim

The term Pilates is defined as a discipline of physical training, where gymnastics is combined with yoga. This training method is based on the execution of exercises that allow the toning of the muscles, through a series of light movements. It is characterized by the use of the mind to control the body, promoting balance.

This methodology was created by the German Joseph H. Pilates at the beginning of the 20th century. This man had a very complicated childhood in terms of his health, and it was this that motivated him to develop a technique of physical and mental conditioning that at first received the name of “contrology”, which he defined as the art of coordinated development of the body-mind and spirit. In order to develop this Pilates system, he used his knowledge of martial arts, yoga and bodybuilding.

Although this method has served as the basis for the emergence of various styles and applications, there are basic principles that should be kept in mind:

Concentration: necessary for the connection between the mind and the body.

Accuracy: necessary for the execution of movements that must be carried out.

Breathing: represents the foundation of this methodology.

Control: it is essential since it prevents sudden exercises that can cause any physical damage.

Fluency of movement: essential for the execution of the exercises to be adequate and at the correct speed.

Centralization: provides that the center of the body is represented by the entire group of abdominal muscles.

Among the benefits that Pilates provides are: it strengthens the abdomen, tones and shapes muscles, increases flexibility, agility and coordination in movements, corrects and improves posture, reduces stress levels.

Currently there are a large number of types of disciplines included under the term Pilates, however each of them can be grouped into two main groups:

Those that are made using specific devices. Several of these devices or machines were invented by Joseph Pilates, there are four:

The reformer is a type of bed where a platform slides through some rails.

The trapeze: it is a type of bed with a steel frame on it, where the exerciser can hang in different positions using different ropes and pulleys.

The chair: this machine is similar to a chair but with pedals adapted through several springs that can be removed or placed depending on the intensity in order to increase or decrease resistance.

The barrel: it is a semicircle-shaped frame used especially to stretch the spine.

Those that are practiced on the floor, for this it is necessary to use a mat, although it can include the use of certain accessories such as: balls, dumbbells, rings, elastic bands, etc.
