What is acrostic poetry? »Its definition and meaning

Anonim

Many writers have used this way of writing to highlight messages in secret mode and have been protagonists in various conspiracy stories, the truth is that an acrostic is a simple and normal poetic composition that between its verses at the beginning of each line in its first words if the initials stand out, a word or sentence can be read that intertwine with each letter between the middle and final letters, when read vertically they form sentences or give one more verse to the written poetic composition, that is, there is another verse or stanza within another.

They walk between rhymes or verses, but you can always find a sentence in a vertical descending way, and although it may be similar to a crossword puzzle, unlike the word you cannot guess, it is only found when reading the first words in its stanzas; where it was a way to send hidden messages and that only a person could decipher if they knew and understood that it was an acrostic, making this a mere play on words fun for the time but that in some cases they were used for many of the conspiracies and enigmas from an era that still holds many secrets these days.

An example of this we can mention La Celestina by Fernando Tovar, where in one of its verses you can read El Bachiller, exactly in the octaves. Another who made an art of this was Luis Tovar, where in El Cancionero General Castellano, an analogy that arose between the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Renaissance, where Tovar intertwines an average of nine female names, namely they were Eloísa, Ana, Guiomar, Leonor, Blanca, Isabel, Elena, María and Francina, that the latter changes the name because the original was Francisca, which is said to have been due to the same composition of the poem.

Writing an acrostic poem is very simple, you just have to have the word or verse that you want to include and from there start with a series of words that rhyme, such as an acrostic that talks about a bed:

Walking I go through the clouds

Abatement me passed his meeting

Looking at the distant horizon

Loving the moment of his memory.
