The Polygamy comes from the Greek " Polis " which means " many " and " Gamos " concerning " Marriage " is a marriage relationship with more than two individuals, is accepted in many cultures and religions. In many western countries polygamy is not recognized because many of these are governed by Christian beliefs where only monogamy is accepted.
There are several types of polygamy:
• Polygyny: It is when a man has a relationship with more than two women at the same time.
• Polyandry: It is when a woman marries more than two men simultaneously.
• Polyamory: It refers to when a person has romantic relationships simultaneously with several individuals without the need to follow a religious or cultural regime.
Regarding the cultural and religious sphere, polygamy is accepted in several of these, in Catholicism, Protestantism, Mormonism, Judaism and Hinduism, at present they do not practice it, although in its beginnings it was freely allowed, it was generally encouraged polygyny in the last four religious groups. As for Catholicism, the Greco-Roman society in which Christianity developed was at least formally monogamous, although the Old Testament clearly showed that all biblical patriarchs were polygamous. Only currently the religion where polygamy is still practiced freely since its religion and culture allows it is Muslim, only polygyny, sometimes up to four wives or how many a man can support.
There are countries in the West where polygamous relationships are accepted, whether they are polygynous or polyandry; but their marital unions with all the individuals in their relationship are not accepted, for this the individual either the man or the woman who is relating to multiple female or male partners respectively, marrying and divorcing until he is married to the last individual of the relationship, generally. It is important to note that casual sexual relationships, orgies, prostitution and partner exchange are not framed within what is known as polygamy, they must always be long-lasting relationships with more than two individuals, not casual encounters.
