Pompeii was a Roman city of antiquity, located in the Campania region (Italy) very close to Naples, embedded at the foot of the Vesuvius volcano. It is a city well known for its particular history: during 79 AD Pompeii suffered one of the most implacable natural tragedies in human history. Thousands of people died buried under a blanket of ash that came from the eruption of the volcano Vesuvius.
According to archaeologists and scientists, who have dedicated themselves to studying the ruins of this ancient city, it is presumed that the ancient inhabitants of the region settled there during the 16th century BC. Although they say they are not sure of the veracity of this information, they rather believe that the founding of the city is closer to the 7th century BC.
As already mentioned, Pompeii is very close to the city of Naples and located at the foot of one of the most important volcanoes in the world, due to its history.
When the eruption of Vesuvius occurred, Pompeii was home to approximately 25 thousand people. A few weeks before this catastrophic event, Pompeii had been the victim of several earthquakes of maximum power (earthquakes) which seriously affected the city, which is why many of the citizens decided to leave the city for fear of new tremors. For this reason, many of them managed to save themselves, however, it is believed that more than 2,000 people perished during this event.
It is important to note that Pompeii was not the only city that suffered damage, also other cities suffered: Stabia and Herculaneum. These two populations were also established on the slopes of the volcano and suffered the same consequences.
Due to the large layer of ash that enveloped the entire city, Pompeii remained hidden and forgotten for many centuries. In 1756 and thanks to a series of manuscripts that indicated the location, a group of archaeologists were able to find the city of Pompeii.
According to what these explorers discovered, this city remained frozen, thus conserving many of its buildings, objects, sculptures, etc. In excellent condition. However, what caused the greatest impression was that many of the people who were buried were found petrified, in the same position they were in before they died.
Today, Pompeii is a tourist site, highly visited by thousands of people who are attracted by the incredible history of this great city.
