The word portal is formed from Latin roots, lexically composed by "porta" which means "door", in addition to the suffix "al" which means "relative to". The most common use that exists today for the term portal, lies in the technological field, to be exact on the internet, where it refers to the site or web page, which thanks to its large amount of information, services and links, can reach, or try to meet the needs of users, who want or need access to any type of information.
In a general sense, web portals offer such services as search engines, online games, news, chat, virtual stores where they can purchase products and different services, directories, email services, among others.
The portal is like an intermediary, which transmits the information, whose source of income is to have a simple way to access all the information on a particular topic; that is to say, to all that information that is contained in the portal, since it is responsible for centralizing the links in an easier and more organized way in order to facilitate the navigation of a context.
One of the main objectives of this system is that users use the portals as their home page, and thus enjoy each of the services before they start browsing other more specific sites. Among the most common Internet portals are: Terra, MSN, Google and Yahoo!
On the other hand, the portal is also a piece of the fall through which one enters the rest of the rooms, which is also called a hallway; like the main door of a tenement house or group of houses, which allows entry to the rest of the houses.
