What is pus? »Its definition and meaning

Anonim

Etymologically, the word pus comes from the Latin “pus” which means “dirt”. Pus is a dense white, greenish or yellowish liquid that occurs in infected or inflamed tissues and flows from wounds. It is made up of leukocytes, dead cells, serum, and other substances; in other words, it is a reaction of the body to an infection, generally of the bacterial type. pus can form in different areas of the body, this can cause certain conditions such as fever, tremors, pain in the affected area, chills and redness in that area.

This fluid is produced by living or dead white cells that move into the intercellular spaces around the affected cells. A clear example where this suppuration occurs is in a pustule or pimple where this fluid forms under the epidermis, but also in an abscess we can find an accumulation of pus in a closed tissue, which is usually caused by a bacterial or parasitic infection. Acne that develops from the accumulation of dead cells and certain sebaceous secretions that clog the hair follicles, can generate pus, when a bacterial agent appears that infects the pores and helps the spread of pimples; It should be noted that many times when a person squeezes a pimple with pus and causes this liquid to come out of the inflamed tissue, it can cause skin lesions, scars and even new infections.

In some diseases there is the presence of pus without it being caused by an infection, this are those that occur with tissue necrosis or accumulation of dead tissue, such as psoriasis or transitory neonatal pustular melanosis.
