The term cyst comes from the Greek "κύστις " which means bladder, and it derives from the Latin "vesica". Word referring to certain bags that are generated between tissues. A cyst is a small bulge bordered by a membrane, and it contains liquid or semi-solid matter. It usually develops inside the ovaries with the shape of balls that can be felt in the lower abdomen, near the leg or can also be detected by means of a gynecological examination which must be performed at least once a year to from the first menstruation. The most common types of cysts appear on the surface of the ovary or its side, which are usually small but can grow, interfering with the production of hormones.
These bumps can form inside any tissue in the body; Most of the cysts found in the lungs are filled with air, while those in the lymphatic system or kidneys are filled with fluid. Some parasites such as echinococci, trichinae, and the dog tapeworm or toxocara canis can form cysts in the muscles, lungs, brain, eyes, and liver.
Cysts can be found on the skin, they can develop due to obstruction of the sebaceous glands, these are related to acne, they can also appear around something stuck in the skin, these cysts are benign, but they can cause pain and changes in the appearance.
Cysts are usually benign, and can be drained or removed with surgery, depending on the type and location, but in certain cases they could cause problems due to their size or because they can burst causing bleeding and some discomfort.
