What is rap »Its definition and meaning

Anonim

Rap is a style of music characterized by a rhythmic recitation of lyrics, which are not sung. It is presented in the United States in the mid-20th century, it is a style that is often associated with the African-American population, but today, it transcends borders and cultures.

The act of performing a rap is known as rapping, while the performers are referred to as rappers or MCs (after the master of the ceremony). When rap, the MC relies on a background melody called a beat, in charge of setting the rhythm.

There are many rap singers who have managed to become a benchmark within the musical genre. However, among those who have achieved the greatest success and recognition are the following:

  • Eminem (born 1972). In 1999 it was when this artist rose to stardom, who has become one of the best sellers in this style. In 1999 was when he began his path to success, which he has maintained until today, although controversy has always surrounded him with certain comments classified as sexist, racist or xenophobic. Among his most important singles are "My name is", "Cleanin out my closet", "Ass like that" or "We made you".
  • El Langui (born 1980). In the case of Spain, without a doubt this singer, leader of the group "La Excepción", is one of the references for rap lovers. He has five albums on the market, four with the group and one solo, and he even has a Goya Award for the song “El truco del manco”.
  • Nas (born 1973). This American is not only considered one of the best rap singers in history, but also one of the best composers of that genre, thanks to pieces like “Made you look” or “I Can”.
  • Tupac Shakur (lived between 1971 and 1996). For many this, also known as 2Pac, is the best rapper in history, as is credited, for example, that he is the artist of that type that has the most sold albums.

Importantly, however, there are many subgenres within rap. Some approach rock and pop, like hardcore rap or pop rap. In these cases, the melodies and themes are closer to the song format that is associated with the genres mentioned.

Gangsta rap, on the other hand, is the form of rap that tries to tell about the social problems that humble regions suffer. Violence, crime and drugs, therefore, appear frequently in the letters.

Despite having arisen in marginal areas and as an expression of rebellion through combative lyrics, rap was progressing to become a commercial event. Today it is part of the music industry and moves millions of dollars a year, being a prominent part of the cultural business throughout the world, but especially in the United States.
