What is reputation? »Its definition and meaning

Anonim

The term can be used with a negative connotation. That is the case of people or places that have an obvious notoriety for some characteristic unworthy of highlighting. Therefore, public opinion already knows the bad reputation in question: "The singer did nothing to deny her reputation and was cold and distant with those who came to greet her", "We already knew the reputation of the hotel, but the truth is that we had to choose it because it is very cheap ”.

If we try to define a reputation, we can say that it is opinion, founded or not, that something or someone enjoys in a social whole, and is culturally constructed. Good reputation is synonymous with prestige, notoriety and good name; bad reputation equates to dishonor or discredit.

In the case of people, a good reputation can be earned by the works they did and / or do, by the merits of their work or study, by their nobility, and so on. As we see, a good reputation can occur in all aspects of a person or only in part: for example “that the man is a gentleman, attractive, hard-working and kind, his reputation is impeccable” and “María has a good reputation as a student, but she is a bad companion ”, respectively.

Bear in mind that the word reputation is not always used in a positive sense, it is also common that in ordinary language and in some contexts we use the term with a negative connotation, for example, in those cases where people or certain places enjoy, for some reason, for a characteristic or situation that has occurred, among other alternatives, of an importance that is not very worth mentioning.

Today, thanks to the advancement of the internet and social media, the concept of online reputation has emerged. It is a term that is used to refer to the image that a particular business has on the Web. In other words, the prestige and value that users give it in that space.

In order to improve its image and achieve greater prestige, it is common for any company to hire a professional called a community manager. He is an Internet expert whose clear function is to manage and control the profiles of those on social networks, as well as his blog or website.

In this way, through messages and interacting with customers, it is how they improve the image of the brand, that Internet users trust it and bet on its services or articles, that improve their results and, above all, indifferent in any case.

Building a positive reputation takes years and requires consistency. It is much more difficult to achieve a good reputation (that is, to be admired and respected by others) than to destroy it by a wrong action or a misleading comment.
