The teaching role is the function exercised by the person (the teacher or professor) in charge of teaching children, youth and adults. This role or role played by teachers, make them mediators between students and knowledge. Being a teaching professional, the teacher is responsible for guiding students in their learning process. It is important that the teacher can create an atmosphere in the classroom that encourages everyone to research, to build their own learning and not just to imitate everything he says or does. The teaching role is not only to provide information and keep the group disciplined, it is also to be an intermediary between the studentand his or her environment. Leaving aside his role as the protagonist of teaching to become the student's guide.
At present and with the entry of new technologies, an important change has been generated when accessing information. This, adapted to the field of teaching, supposes an equally important transformation in the teaching role. Today, all the topics that students must learn are online, so the question is: What is the role of teachers in this new information system?
Long ago, teachers were the ones who selected the topics that were going to be taught to students, that is, they chose the information, refined it and then delivered it to their students. The teacher was the one who elaborated the students' knowledge and any doubts they might have, the teacher was there to clarify them. Nowadays, it is easier and faster for the student to go to the internet and find what they need. What happens, that the student when entering the web, will find a lot of information that perhaps he will not be able to assimilate and will require a continuous selection with which he will have to learn to distinguish and give value, to those topics that really are valuable.
Faced with the increase in new information and communication technologies (ICT), the new teaching role is as follows:
- Be an intermediary that facilitates teaching to your students, offering them elementary knowledge, so that they can understand the breadth of content that they will find on the internet.
- Come up with problems that encourage students to research, choose, and process all the information that is helpful to them.
- The teacher must help his students pedagogically, providing them with the necessary mechanisms to respond to their interests and abilities.
- The teacher to generate a pleasant work environment, where the spontaneity of the students and their desire to learn are promoted.
- Regarding the evaluation, the teacher must have a constant personalized follow-up for each student and thus be able to evaluate how much their individual progress has been.
