In the religious context, a lay person or lay person, as it is also known, is that person or group of people who belong to the Catholic Christian religion through baptism, but who are not part of the clergy, that is, they are neither priests nor bishops or nuns. In this way it can be said that the laity are those faithful who have been baptized into the church.
The role of the laity within the educational context is extremely important, since they have the capacity and knowledge to make everything related to the Catholic religion known, an example of this are the catechists, despite not being priests, They are authorized to teach others everything that God expresses through the Bible, they are people committed to the church to evangelize everyone who does not yet belong to it.
One of the elements that distinguishes a lay person is baptism. It is that thanks to this sacrament, the laity of God's people are entitled to the right to call themselves children of God and to collaborate with that divine filiation. But in the same way, they collaborate by working so that the message of redemption is received by all men. This commitment is more pressing when it is known that through them other people will be able to hear the gospel and know God.
The actions carried out by the laity within the church is not indifferent, on the contrary it is extremely active, in such a way that they can help to be conquered by the spirit of the gospel in all the environments in which they are involved.
It is important to note that the role of the laity began to be specified in 1959, during the Second Vatican Council. From there, the Catholic Church began to recognize the figure of the laity, as an important element, within the community of parishioners. In this sense, this council considered the updating of certain religious terms that prevented the laity from having a prominent role within religious activities, as they were not a formal member of the church as an institution.
