Piaget's theory was the name given to a hypothesis about the nature and development of people's intellect. This was first proposed by the Swiss-born psychologist Jean Piaget, so the name of this approach is in his honor. Piaget believed that a person's childhood plays an important and active role in the development of intelligence, and that the child also acquires knowledge through active doing and exploring. According to this theory, children go through a series of specific stages that are consistent with their intellect and their ability to perceive mature relationships. These stages of the child's development occur in afixed order in all children, regardless of race, color, region where they live, etc.
Jean Piaget a pioneer psychologist in conducting systematic studies regarding cognitive development. His contributions may include a theory of the stage of cognitive development of the child, highly detailed observational studies regarding cognition in infants, as well as a series of simple but nevertheless very ingenious tests with which various cognitive abilities were revealed.. Prior to Piaget's hypotheses, the idea that was had within the field of psychology, was the fact that children were less competent thinkers compared to adults.
Among his most outstanding studies undoubtedly the one that stands out the most is his theory of motor sensorial intelligence, it proposes the natural and spontaneous development of practical intelligence in infants and that it will be formed through the various concepts that the child goes acquiring through the different objects with which it comes face to face and which also remain stable in both space and time in their environment.
While the development of sensory motor intelligence will be presented in four successive levels, in the first place it begins in the lactation stage which lasts up to two years. It is during this stage that the first affect regulations and external fixations of them are carried out. In the second level or also called preoperative, it is in which the intuitive intelligence makes its stellar appearance, this appears between two and seven years and how.
The third stage on the other hand starts from seven to twelve years of age. According to Piaget, it is during this stage that concrete intellectual operations develop, since they develop moral, social and logical feelings in the individual. Finally, in the fourth stage is the level of formal operations, this begins at twelve years of age, it is in which the individual's personality is formed and where their insertion in the affective and intellectual world of adults occurs.
