It was one of the most important cities in pre-Hispanic Mesoamerica, the term derives from the Nahuatl language that means “place where men become men”, it was used for the first time by the Mexica people, to give that name to that a ruined city which had been erected by a civilization before them, today the true name which was given by its original inhabitants remains unknown. Its location is in what is the current valley of Mexico about 80 kilometers away from Mexico City. In 1987 it was declared by Unesco as a World Heritage Site.
Currently Teotihuacán is composed of a series of archaeological remains, which were built by the Mayan people, although there have been many investigations around this ancient city, it has not been possible to establish an exact date of its construction, however the experts They speculate that a large part of its buildings date from the Christian era, this according to data from findings in the Pyramid of the Moon. Teotihuacán lived its heyday in the 3rd and 7th centuries AD, during which time it was the center of Mayan politics and commerce, its population is estimated between 100 thousand and 200 thousand people, a large number for a city of 21 km2.
The dominance of Teotihuacán undoubtedly left its mark on subsequent societies throughout Mesoamerica. During the course of the 7th century, the city went into decline, due to constant internal disputes in conjunction with variations in the climate caused Teotihuacán to end up becoming extinct and its inhabitants spread to different regions of Mexico.
Regarding their racial and cultural origin, it is not entirely clear, although there are those who affirm that the Nahuas and the Totonacs influenced their culture. According to studies carried out on the ruins, they show that this was a very diverse city, where various cultural groups lived together.
At present its remains are protected as it is considered an area of great historical and cultural value, it is considered one of the main tourist attractions in Mexico.
