It is a polysemic concept that can change according to the area of study in which it is applied; Likewise, it is said that territory is the space that belongs to a community, governmental institution or a person. Just as it can be an area that maintains great importance for certain communities, because it represents a cultural or sentimental identity. In geography, the word is used to determine a study area (as a synonym for terms such as relief and land surface), in which its location will be analyzed., population, vegetation and other characteristics that will reveal all its physical characteristics. Within the ecology area, the territory is simply a natural land surface or a natural and cultural landscape.

Other definitions dictate that a territory is not just an extension of land, different factors are also taken into account, such as its human inhabitants, in addition to the rural and urban areas that it possesses, that is, it is a spatial system. Society prefers to say that territory is the area that gathers it and serves as the basis for interaction between the individuals that make it up. In a similar way, the concept of territory is conceived within politics, by defining it as the area in which the general population sits to lead an organized life.

Animals, for their part, have natural instincts that allow them to mark and defend areas where they decided to stay, in a condition called territoriality. Birds and fish are the most basic examples to have a conception of the term. They make it known by means of physical characteristics different from those that are commonly presented.
