What is fallopian tubes? »Its definition and meaning

Anonim

The fallopian tubes are two anatomical tubes that put the uterus in contact with the ovaries, their function is to transport the ovum released during ovulation to the uterus. In the same way, they serve as a way for the sperm to fertilize the egg. Their name is due to the Italian anatomist Gabrielle Falloppio who was the one who discovered them.

Structurally, these tubes have a thickness similar to that of a pencil and their length ranges between 10 and 18 centimeters. These ducts are lined by a mucosa that contain hair cells that allow the egg to move through them.

As has already been observed, these organs of the reproductive system are linked to ovulation, fertilization and pregnancy. This is why when a woman does not want to have more children, she asks her doctor to perform a surgery called a tubal ligation. This operation consists of obstructing the tubes of the tubes, in such a way that it does not allow the circulation of the ovum and the sperm.

This procedure has its advantages and disadvantages, some of its advantages are:

  • If done correctly, it is the safest method of contraception.
  • The production of hormones does not vary.
  • It does not produce any interference during sexual intercourse.
  • It is a surgery that does not involve any risk.

Among its disadvantages are:

  • It represents a definitive procedure, meaning that once it is done there is no going back.
  • It is not recommended to practice it for young women or teenagers.

There is another method that consists of tubal removal, this surgical procedure is performed in women with family precedents of ovarian cancer and who are at risk of suffering from this disease. in this case the specialist recommends surgery and thus avoid future cancer problems.

On the other hand, the various diseases that affect these ducts should also be mentioned:

Amebiasis: it is a disease caused by the parasite Entamoeba Histolytica.

Endometriosis: consists of the presence and increase of endometrial tissue in the external part of the uterus.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: This disease is caused by sexually transmitted infections. It appears due to the increase of bacteria in the vaginal area and the cervix.
