The origin of the anointing comes from a practice of shepherds. Lice and other insects often get into sheep's wool, and when they approach the sheep's head, they can hide in the sheep's ears and kill the sheep. So the ancient shepherds poured oil on the heads of the sheep. This made the wool slippery, making it impossible for the insects to get close to the sheep's ears because the insects would slide off. From this, the anointing became a symbol of blessing, protection, and empowerment.
The New Testament Greek words for "anoint" are chrio, which means "to anoint or rub with oil" and, by implication, "to consecrate for a religious office or service"; and aleipho, which means "to anoint." In Biblical times, people were anointed with oil to symbolize God's blessing or God's call on that person's life (Exodus 29: 7, Exodus 40: 9, 2 Kings 9: 6, Ecclesiastes 9: 8, James 5:14). Anointed with a special purpose to be a king, a prophet, a builder, etc. There is nothing wrong with anointing a person with oil today. We have to make sure that the purpose of the anointing is in accordance with the Scriptures, the anointing should not be seen as a "magic potion". The oil itself has no power, only God can anoint a person for a purpose. If we use oil, it is just a symbol of what God is doing.
When we receive Christ in our hearts, it is when God himself anoints us (true baptism) with his Spirit, that is why oil is a symbol of this, and when it is anointed, God begins his purifying and sanctifying work in each one of us.. us, cleansing ourselves little by little and stripping ourselves of the old man who was corrupted by his sins and crimes Ephesians 4:22 who, regarding his old way of life, get rid of the old man, who is corrupted according to deceptive desires.
Another meaning of the word anointed is "chosen." The Bible says that Christ was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit to preach the Good News and deliver those who had been captivated by sin (Luke 4: 18-19, Acts 10).: 38). After leaving earth, Christ gave us the gift of the Holy Spirit (John 14:16). Now all Christians are anointed, chosen for a specific purpose: to promote the Kingdom of God (1 John 2:20).
