The viceroy was an important position at the time of the reigns, being then the representative of the crown in lands far from the kingdom; in other words, it was the title given to those who enforced the king's decisions in a given colony. The role of the viceroy took quite a leading role during the colonial era when the Spanish kingdom sent representatives to different parts of the world so that they could be colonized, the administration and management of those lands were under the mandate of numerous viceroys becoming the highest authority of the region he commanded, since he commanded in the name of the king.
For this reason the growth of the number of viceroys is related to the amount of territories that were colonized by the Spanish mandate, it was the only way to control and administer all the distant lands from Europe, any failure that was observed in the production of said territory described was attributed to a fault of the viceroy and he had to answer to the crown; A clear example of a viceroy was Christopher Columbus since he was the highest authority in the land of the Indies, a title that was granted to him when he arrived in the American lands as a right in the lands that he "discovered" for the Spanish reign.
Other examples of Viceroyalty are: Viceroyalty of La Plata, Peru and Viceroyalty of Nueva Granada, which were identified as the American lands were traveled; It is important to know that the viceroys were not only outside the European continent, even within the Spanish colonies there were viceroys. Several examples would be: viceroy of Catalonia, Sardinia and Sicily.
