The word zodiac comes from the Latin "zodiăcus" and this, in turn, derives from the Greek "ζῳδιακός" or "zodión" which means "circle of animals", although other sources state that this word means small image of an animal. In astrology, the zodiac is understood to be the band or circular belt of the celestial sphere, which is 16 to 18 degrees wide, and through its center it crosses the ecliptic and in this space there are twelve parts that correspond to the twelve signs, houses or constellations, which the sun travels in its apparent annual course.
These twelve symbols took their name and their appearance from each constellation, almost all of them animals, among them are, Pisces represented by fish, and its symbol is of two fish joined in the middle; Aries symbolized by the head and horns of a ram; Taurus or "taurus" that represents the head and horns of a bull; Cancer is symbolized by the crab; then Leo, this represents the lion; Scorpio or "scorpio", symbolized by the scorpion although sometimes its symbolism is shaped like an "M", with a scorpio tail and sting; Capricorn or "capricornus" symbolized by a goat with a fish tail. And those who do not have animal forms are, Aquariusor "aquarius" which represents water and is symbolized by the water carrier or by waves in the water; Libra which is represented by a weight or scales; Sagittarius or "sagittarius" symbolized by the archer and other times only by an arrow; Virgo representing the virgin or virginity; and finally we have Gemini symbolized by the twins or by the Roman number two.
