Drowning is understood to be that process that causes a problem or impediment to breathing that may be due to various causes, either by immersion or submersion in a certain liquid; This phenomenon can be described as a type of suffocation due to great difficulty in breathing. According to the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy, drowning refers to the action and effect of drowning or drowning or simply "drowning". On various occasions this condition is generated thanks to certain respiratory problems due to the rapid acquisition of fluids within the respiratory tract; In these cases, the first instinct of the individual will be to hold their breath until they can no longer take it and the liquid will be conducted directly to the lungs, preventing the normal exchange of gas in these organs, which can result in death.
The invasion of water into the lungs or airways can cause a kind of apnea, because the so-called epiglottis is obstructed to protect the airways, making free breathing impossible even if the head is kept above water; then the oxygen that remains in the body is depleted and what is known as hypoxemia or a great decrease in the pressure of oxygen in the blood occurs.
In the case of wet drowning, there are four drowning states, classified according to their severity, which are: aquatic stress, small hypoxia, large hypoxia, and anoxic drowning. As for the most common symptoms are partial or complete loss of pulse and dilated pupils.
Drowning can also occur without the need for fluids, but in the same way it is the lack or absence of air, which is due to the obstruction of the airway by a foreign body; and in this case to provide assistance to people with this type of drowning, the Heimlich maneuver can be used, a first aid procedure that helps to unblock the respiratory tract.
