Self-sufficiency, also known as self-sufficiency, is a way of life in which a person is in charge of obtaining all the necessary economic assets through their own management. In this way, any need for survival would remain in the hands of the individual himself, rejecting any external help. This is often seen as the ultimate expression of personal autonomy and individual independence. Some even choose to become producers / consumers, that is, they would be in charge of making or obtaining each of the inputs that they would use in their daily lives. This style of has been popularized since the 1960s, when the hippie generation advocated a society in which the consumers became the producers.
This practice is not only started by people who are fully related to the alternative life. Some communities, observing the advantages they can bring to their life and general well-being, decide to develop projects to collaborate with the environment and that do not interfere with their routine. While some decide to fully include the self-sufficient model, others prefer to take it partially, conceiving self-sustainable forms of energy or electricity, food production, or simply getting money without someone else's management.
The governments of some countries, when they are in times of war, decide to have an autarky or self-sufficient economy, in which no type of product that comes from abroad is accepted. This is achieved through the imposition of various laws or regulations for trade, making it difficult to enter inputs manufactured in neighboring lands. In these, the desire for self-sufficiency prevails, in addition to the constant rejection of aid that comes from other nations.
