Diaper rash is an irritation to the skin of babies and older children who are still wearing diapers. This dermatitis is due to the friction of feces and urine with the delicate skin of the baby. This irritation is more common in children from 0 to 12 months and is more common when they begin to eat solid foods.
Diaper dermatitis is caused by a fungus that is known by the name of candida and which is very common in babies.
Children who are usually most vulnerable to dermatitis are those who do not maintain good hygiene and remain wet for a long time. Products used to wash cloth diapers also occur in children who have diarrhea, urinary tract infections and allergic reactions.
Some symptoms and signs of diaper rash are as follows:
- Pinkish rash.
- Very reddened parts of the male penis.
- Red and swollen parts of the vulva in girls.
- Ulcers and bubbles with pus.
- Lesions that increase and enlarge linking with existing irritation.
For diaper rash it is advisable to have the baby's skin completely clean and dry, as well as to keep it without a diaper for as long as possible.
Among the treatments for diaper rash are odorless ointments as a protector of the skin in contact with the fabric, pediatricians recommend creams that contain moisturizer such as petroleum jelly, zinc oxide or panthenol that contain great regenerative qualities giving softness and soothing from itching this would apply in cases of mild dermatitis.
When diaper dermatitis is more acute it is because there is the presence of the fungus called candida, in this case it must be treated by drugs in the form of topical and antifungal creams such as mycostatin, clotrimazole, ketoconazole or nystatin. Steroid ointment like 1% hydrocortisone is also recommended .
It recommends doctors do not use starch from corn or powders because it can worsen irritation on the skin of your baby.
