What is oriental philosophy? »Its definition and meaning

Anonim

Eastern philosophy is integrated by different philosophical and religious currents that originated in Asia of South and East Asia. It is a philosophy that spread from the invasions carried out by Alexander the Great, since in the Hellenistic era, elements of Greek and Eastern culture were united.

The Chinese religion promoted the development of the philosophy that they established. It was a philosophy that defended the fact that the phenomena of nature had been the answer to the sins committed by human beings. However, the philosophy that was generated refutes these ideas as inappropriate since they do not contribute to man leading a righteous life. Philosophers such as Lao Tzu, Confucius and later Buddha, opposed these superstition-filled beliefs and leaned more towards the wisdom to live and let live.

Regarding this issue of Eastern philosophies, there has been some debate on the issue of calling certain currents of Eastern thought "religions". But hey, the controversy is really based on a semantic problem and congruence in the use of the term "religion" for certain schools, such as Buddhism. The Buddhist school does not accept that what they practice is classified as a religion, but that it is a philosophy.

The main representatives of Eastern philosophy were:

  • Lao Tzu: his philosophy is based on the way of man. Lao Tzu argue that wisdom can be achieved through virtue and harmony with the universe, which will influence the happiness of man.
  • Confucius: his philosophy focuses on human beings and their relationships. Confucianism emphasizes formal ceremonies in all areas of life. For example, the case of relations between a boss and his employee, husband and wife, a father and a son, etc. In all these relationships, an attitude of loyalty, respect and benevolence must be shown from the superior to the subordinate and vice versa.
  • Buddhism: the philosophy that manages Buddhism pursues a main objective and is to reach self-knowledge. Buddhism accepts the existence of a God of its own within each human being and that can only be glimpsed by knowing himself.
