What is identity? »Its definition and meaning

The word identity comes from the Latin ”identĭtas” and this from the entry “idem” which means “the same”. When we talk about identity, we can generally be referring to that series of traits, attributes or characteristics of a person, subject or even a group of them that manage to differentiate them from others. For its part, identity also refers to that appreciation or perception that each individual has about himself in comparison with others, which can also include the perception of an entire community; and it is the identity that is in charge of forging and directing a community, thus defining its needs, actions, tastes, priorities or traits that identifies and distinguishes them.

It should be noted that many of those characteristics that establish the identity of the human being are usually hereditary or innate of the person, however certain particularities of each individual emanate from the influence exerted by the environment that surrounds him as a consequence of the experiences lived through the years.

We can find different types of identities in relation to the personality of an individual, among them are:

Cultural identity: which refers to all those characteristics in reference to a certain culture, it ranges from beliefs, customs, behaviors, traditions, values ​​that a certain community possesses that allow them to be identified from the rest.

Personal identity: it is that which each person possesses when they are given a name and a surname.

National identity: refers to the state or feeling of identity that each person belonging to a nation or territory has, which may include aspects such as their culture and language.

Gender identity: includes that group of feelings or thoughts in relation to a person that enables them to identify with a particular gender; identity that manages to differentiate itself from sexual identity.

Finally, in the field of mathematics, it is known by identity, the equality between two expressions that can be verified whatever the value of its variables.
