It comes from the action of refuting and whose purpose is to destroy or dismiss the reasons of the contrary. There is a formula to understand this term, having conclusions that can be inferred from a hypothesis and if these conclusions are not given then the result is that the hypothesis is not given either. For example, all the swans are white and in the garden there is now a swan, this suggests that the swan that is there is white but they say that the swan in the garden is black, so this implies that not all the swans are white. To understand the word refutation more simply, it has to be the act of contradicting what one does not agree with through a speech.
One of the most important elements in the argumentative process is refutation, since, as in this process, in the scientific method it also has great relevance, since in both, true theories are sought to study each of the existing disciplines. Many times a theory is denied for lack of consistent and reliable evidence to support it. Sometimes a well-made refutation, even if it is not correct, can penetrate well into the dispute, it all depends on whether the arguments given are useful for such action.
In the political sphere, refuting is a very common term, since the rulers always accuse others of not having done anything during their administration and the accused defend themselves by refuting such accusation.
For a rebuttal to be successful , three phases must be met:
- Listen well to what the other person says.
- The second phase is to refute and it is when we proceed to break down the aspects of what is argued by the other person that are false, establishing reasons that completely knock them down.
- The moment of conclusion is the phase in which you must make it clear to the other person that your arguments were out of place or were illogical.
A clear example of refutation in world history was when Nicholas Copernicus refuted the geocentric theory, proving that the sun is the center of the universe. Galileo Galilei proved this theory although in order to stay alive he had to keep the truth.
