The common cold, also known as the common cold or catarrh, is the name given to a viral infectious disease that is very common of the upper respiratory system and that usually affects the nose, paranasal sinuses, pharynx and larynx. This condition is caused primarily by rhinovirus, is self-limited, and can occur in people of all ages.

Regarding its contagion, the virus spreads through contact with the secretions of the infected person or, failing that, through the inhalation of their saliva droplets. Symptoms appear between one and two days after having contact with the secretions.

Taking into account the above, the cold is a pathology that is caused by rhinovirus or coronavirus, its most distinctive symptoms are sneezing, congestion, nasal secretions, headache, general malaise and frequent cough. This type of cold usually lasts between three and ten days, after which time the signs end spontaneously. It should be noted that the common cold and the flu are two different things, since the latter is a more serious viral infection with additional symptoms that include high fever, muscle aches, and body tremors.

For colds there is no single treatment or specific measure to deal with it, so those affected often take over-the- counter medications or remedies from alternative medicine. In some cases, it may be necessary to see a doctor, especially when symptoms do not stop after a while. A good option to decrease the duration and severity of cold is through the consumption of foods with vitamin C. Some experts argue that this vitamin even helps reduce the incidence of the disease in people who are exposed to bad environmental conditions.
