What is urban? »Its definition and meaning

Anonim

The word Urban comes from the Latin word urbanus , it is the adjective that refers to everything related to cities.

People who live in cities are socially and economically different from one another, and are engaged in secondary and tertiary activities; that is, industrial, commercial and service activities.

Because these activities require a lot of labor, the urban environment is characterized by the great concentration or agglomeration of human masses in limited spaces whose density exceeds at most the national average in all cases. Many times this accumulation of people is grouped in multi-family dwellings.

There is no uniformity of criteria to define what is urban population, a statistical criterion is generally adopted and urban is considered to be the population that lives in populated centers with more than 2,000, 5,000 or 10,000 people, depending on the countries.

Urban concentration poses serious drawbacks that worsen as the 21st century progresses, since overcrowding in urban centers considerably hinders daily life and services, and damages the state of the environment (pollution). Most of the countries present as main problems that affect the urban population: insufficient transportation and housing, as well as social inequality and insecurity.

The great masses of the population are agglomerated in cities that try to alleviate the problem of space through skyscrapers of great proportions (as is the case of New York) or with urban plans organized according to previous planning (Chandigarh in India or Brasilia in Brazil).

The term Urban is also represented as the name of several popes of the Catholic Church, so far there have been eight popes (from Urban I to Urban VIII).

In addition, the urban individual is said to be fine, courteous, cultured, educated, considerate, accomplished and attentive.
