Roman forum was called a central place, comparable to a square, located in the central areas of the city, where other governmental, religious and economic buildings were also located, during that time it was a place where various activities took place, such as such as commerce, religion, prostitution and the management of justice. It can be said then that the Roman forum was a place of great importance in the cities of the empire since the most important activities in the cities were carried out in it.
This building in its beginnings served as a kind of main market and was located at the entrance to the city, it had a great impact on social activities since it was believed that it was outside the limits of the population, then in the 8th century BC increased its prestige, for this reason it was included in most of the activities of the city to such an extent that the really important actions were transferred to it. Because he was the center of all activity, the vast majority of the most important institutions were located in the forum, some examples were the basilica, the curia, the archives, the temple etc. Then in the 3rd century BC porticoes were implemented to close the forums.
Currently only ruins are what remains of the Roman forum, among the most important monuments that the forum included are the Temple of Romulus, that of Vesta, Saturn, Venus, Rome and the temple of Castor and Pollux, in addition to the Basilica of Julia, the Tabular, the seat of the senate, the Arch of Septimius Severus, as well as these, many others were built in the vicinity of the forum.
In the Middle Ages, the vast majority of the buildings were buried under their own remains and those of the city, during the 14th century a large number of materials were extracted from the remains of the forum, marble being one of the most used, in order to be used in constructions commissioned by the Pope, such as the Vatican.
