Windows Mobile is an operating system based on Microsoft Windows CE technology, and designed specifically for mobile devices. It is a compact, very light system, manufactured to perform very specific procedures on hardware with limited resource capacities (video, memory, processor, etc.).
We can find it in pocket devices such as Pocket PC (PPC), Smartphones, and other portable media devices. This system is closely linked to other products of the same brand (Live services, Office Mobile, Internet Explorer Mobile, etc.) and has a graphical interface of excellent quality and very similar to the desktop versions of Windows, allowing users to Users provide a work environment much like the one you have at home or in the office.
Windows Mobile has several platforms, the first of which was launched in 2000 as Pocket PC 2000 , which was based on Windows CE 3.0, and aimed at devices without telephone capacity (Pocket PC and Palm). It featured infrared transfer and character recognition functions. For 2001, Pocket PC 2002 appeared, also with CE 3.0 as a base, but incorporating telephone support, a better interface and VPN connectivity.
In June 2003, the Pocket PC was renamed Windows Mobile, thus appearing Windows Mobile 2003 . It had four editions: “Pocket PC Premium”, “Pocket PC Professional”, “Smartphone” and “Pocket PC Phone”. Windows CE 4.20 became its base, and by 2004 its Second Edition would appear, with an increase in supported resolutions and support for WPA encryption of wireless networks.
In February 2007 Windows Mobile 6 is launched , with three editions: Standard, Professional and Classic, and Windows CE 5.2 as a base. This version is linked to Windows Live, has higher resolution and VoIP support. In 2008, Windows Mobile 6.1 is introduced, which was issued for bug fixes, performance improvements, interface changes, etc.
Windows Mobile 6.5 was released in May 2009, introducing versions such as 6.51, 6.53, and 6.55 . The greatest novelty of this system is the complete change of the user interface to adapt it to the new touch devices so that they can be easily operated with the finger, without the need for a pointer, it also presents improvements in the response of Internet Explorer Mobile 6, and more elaborate gesture detection.
In recent years, Windows Mobile has been overshadowed by Apple's iPhone, Android, and Blackberry. So Microsoft has made the decision not to distribute this operating system any more, and to start one from scratch called Windows Phone , which will be different, and will bring improvements and novelties, in order to gain points again in the mobile device market.
